Tom Joad released from jail, discovers family has moved. Tom traces okie immigrants heading west and finds his family. Family does demeaning, backbreaking labor for no money; people starve. Tom gets political and is forced on the lam, promising "wherever there's a fight so hungry people can eat, i'll be there."
