Buranovskiye Babushki – more surreal than Second Life

May 28th, 2012

2012 Eurovision
The overwhelming sentimental favorite was a troupe of Russian grandmothers called the Buranovskiye Babushki. Eurovision is known for its over-the-top kitsch, but, even by its standards, there was something remarkable about grannies from the central Russian republic of Udmurtia, not far from where the Ural Mountains border on Siberia. The Babushki, with an average age of 75, finished second over all with a jaunty pop song called “Party for Everybody.”

Hot Dogs Your Way

July 6th, 2011

On July 4th, The Journey West celebrated the day America became America and declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on July 4, 1776 with local Beijingers and tourists. To commemorate this historic event we attempted to hold an abridged reading of the Declaration of Independence that was to be followed by a parade of simulated fireworks, fire eating, jugglers, music and classic American BBQ (barbecue) featuring hot dogs with all the fixings, corn-on-the-cob, Coca-cola, Pepsi and of course apple pie! Aside from the corn that never got cooked we got all the food right with the addition of fabulous home made peach and cherry pies. But the parade got a little overtaken by the locals line dance… (video courtesy An Xiao Studio)
